چکیده
The recent paper by Curis & Bénazeth (2001) considers modeling of the experimental distribution of the absorption coefficient. As a preamble to this, the authors consider the exact law of the quotient of two independent normal random variables. They claim to have derived the exact law, it being a ‘quite long and complex’ expression not given in the paper. In fact, the problem of the quotient of two independent or dependent normal random variables was considered in the 1960s by Marsaglia (1965) and Hinkley (1969). Both these papers provide neat and compact expressions for the exact law of the ratio. So, we are somewhat surprised by the claim by Curis & Bénazeth (2001). For completeness, we would like to add that Yatchew (1986) has recently extended the work of Marsaglia (1965) and Hinkley (1969) to the multivariate case. The purpose of this correspondence is not just to correct the mistake. We feel the references mentioned above can help the readers and authors of this journal in making appropriate choices with regard to similar modeling problems. It will also help to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

Bayes, E-Bayes and Robust Bayes Premium Estimation and Prediction under the Squared Log Error Loss Function
In risk analysis based on Bayesian framework, premium calculation requires specification of a prior distribution for the risk parameter in the heterogeneous portfolio. When the prior knowledge is vague, the E-Bayesian and robust Bayesian analysis can be used to handle the uncertainty in specifying the prior distribution by considering a class of priors instead of a single prior. In th...
متن کاملAdsorption Mechanisms of Cadmium onto Pillared Clays and Chalcogenides
Interactions between Cd, pillared clays and chalcogenedies have been studied using nanomineralogical experiments. XRD, DSC and chemical analysis. The synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was applied to characterize the reaction phases. The mean bond lengths between, Cd-S, Fe-S, Sb-S, Cd-Cd (in chalcogenedies), Al-Cd, Cd-Ti, and Fe-Cd, (in pillared clays) were determined by XAS ...

The scientific research regarding investigation, characterization and protection of the archeological specimens is manifested through a notable participation of multidisciplinary subjects and experts, scientists and archeometrists. One of the main principals which are considered by archaeometrists in the study of the precious specimens is the utilizing nondestructive methods. As an example, in ...
متن کاملComparing Discriminant Analysis, Ecological Niche Factor Analysis and Logistic Regression Methods for Geographic Distribution Modelling of Eurotia ceratoides (L.) C. A. Mey
Eurotia ceratoides (L.) C. A. Mey is an important plant species in semi-arid landsin Iran. New approaches are required to determine the distribution of this plant species. Forthis reason, geographical distributions of Eurotia ceratoides were assessed using threedifferent models including: Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA), Ecological Niche FactorAnalysis (ENFA) and Logistic Regression (LR). ...
متن کاملDevelopment and exploration of a new methodology for the fitting and analysis of XAS data.
A new data analysis methodology for X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) is introduced and tested using several examples. The methodology has been implemented within the context of a new Matlab-based program discussed in a companion related article [Delgado-Jaime et al. (2010), J. Synchrotron Rad. 17, 132-137]. The approach makes use of a Monte Carlo search method to seek appropriate...
